1%er Donates $1M To Fund Berkley Scholarships For Illegal Aliens Funny

December 11, 2012

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) – The University of California’s Berkeley campus announced on Tuesday that a private foundation has given $1 million to fund scholarships for illegal immigrants.

The scholarships will go to nearly 200 students who are not eligible for federal grants, government-backed loans or work-study positions, the school said.

The Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, a private family foundation, provided the scholarship grant. It is the largest scholarship for undocumented immigrants ever given to a U.S. university, the foundation said.”These motivated, hardworking and inspiring students are an asset to our state and our country,” the fund’s president, Ira Hirschfield, said in a statement

Christina Romer, Cheif Economic Advisor, Exits Stage Left, Coke Snorting Monkeys Disapprove

August 9, 2010

It’s no coincidence that Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, announced her retirement the day before Friday’s brutal unemployment report. With 131,000 more jobs lost in July, and downward revisions of 97,000 for the previous two months, it’s easy to see why she would start looking for the exits.

Romer is best known for drafting the February 2009 report “The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan,” which the White House used as an ammunition belt in the fight to gain passage of its $862 billion economic stimulus bill (the actual cost of which exceeds $1 trillion when interest is included). Romer predicted that following passage of the stimulus bill, unemployment would plateau below 8 percent last fall and by this month register at 7 percent. That’s not close enough for government work, as unemployment stands at 9.5 percent today. It would be higher except that hundreds of thousands of frustrated job seekers have given up looking for new jobs and dropped out of the labor force.

Predictably, the stimulus bill has proven to be an extraordinary waste of borrowed money that has failed to create jobs, generate economic growth or do much of anything other than line the pockets of White House political allies. That and give $308 million in subsidies to BP before the Gulf oil spill disaster, and subsidize a study on what happens when monkeys snort coke

As Romer fades back to her teaching post at Berkeley, Obama is adding to the economic misery by creating an environment of regulatory uncertainty.

BP In Bed With UC Berkley, Reputation At Stake, Can’t See The Forest For the Trees

July 31, 2010

BERKELEY, Calif. — BP’s catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is fueling opposition to the University of California, Berkeley’s research partnership with the British company, with activists and professors on the famously liberal campus calling for a severing of ties.

The oil giant gave UC Berkeley a $500 million grant in 2007 to create the Energy Biosciences Institute, which works to develop new sources of plant-based fuel. The 10-year deal, believed to be the largest-ever corporate sponsorship of university research, has outraged many students and professors who worry the global oil company will exert too much influence over academic research and damage the university’s reputation.

But UC Berkeley officials say the institute has nothing to do with the Gulf spill, and the university has no plans to end its research partnership with BP.

“The horrible events in the Gulf should only strengthen our commitment to find alternatives to fossil fuels,” said Graham Fleming, UC Berkeley’s vice chancellor of research. “Why would anyone’s interest be served by stopping this research?”

Critics say corporate money steers university resources toward certain types of research, and widens the financial disparity between faculty members in science and engineering and those in the humanities and social sciences.

Other critics say doesn’t federal money do the same thing but in social engineering..

Cal Makes Move Toward GPA,SAT,ACT,DNA For College Admissions

May 19, 2010

BERKELEY, Calif. — UC Berkeley is adding something a little different this year in its welcome package — cotton swabs for a DNA sample.

In the past, incoming freshman and transfer students have received a rather typical welcome book from the College of Letters and Science’s “On the Same Page” program, but this year the students will be asked for more.

The students will be asked to voluntarily submit a DNA sample. The cotton swabs will come with two bar code labels. One label will be put on the DNA sample and the other is kept for the students own records.

The confidential process is being overseen by Jasper Rine, a campus professor of Genetics and Development Biology, who says the test results will help students make decisions about their diet and lifestyle.

“This type of experience is one of the true, unique values of a Berkeley education. We don’t just give you books to read,” Mark Schlissel, dean of the division of biological sciences said. “We involve you in cutting edge issues in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. You won’t see this anywhere else in higher education.

College admissions at Cal has become so strict, and to solve high school grade point inflation  may resort to admissions through DNA review in the future…
