Eagle Rock Residents Turn Out To Vote, Enticed By Free Pot, Voting Early Voting Often… Voting?????

October 20, 2012

Fliers offering $40 worth of free medical-grade marijuana were reportedly passed out in Eagle Rock to try and draw residents to vote in the local election.

Was the free pot an incentive to get a larger turnout? Politics ranked “high” on resident’s list of priorities. Nearly 10 times as many voters – 792 residents – turned out to the polls during the recent Neighborhood Council elections than last year.

L.A. City Councilman Jose Huizar believes the record voter turnout had nothing to do with the pot giveaway and was instead motivated by residents trying to take control of their community

Some reported seeing  fliers offering free transportation to their voting booth.

Do You Know The Way To San Jose Dude? HempCon 2010

August 9, 2010

A convention on cannabis, the first ever in the South Bay, brought thousands of people to the San Jose Convention Center over the weekend.

HempCon 2010 featured vendors and informational booths on everything from medical marijuana’s benefits to growing options.

There was information about medical marijuana, places set up to explain the current laws and booths aimed at pushing Prop 19 — the November ballot issue to legalize pot for recreational purposes. Visitors could also learn about pot clubs in the Bay Area, growing weed at home and what equipment is needed to start an indoor farm.

There was even legal help available and also a table set up for people who wanted to become licensed, ID-carrying medical marijuana patients.

There was one thing you couldn’t do at HempCon: Smoke pot. The director of the event asked the city for permission to set up a self-medication tent inside but they city said no. So any smoking — cigarette or otherwise — couldn’t take place closer than 25 feet from the convention hall.

If voters pass Prop 19 in November, legal wrangling is sure to follow but cannabis could become quite a cash crop for the state.

Would wait to see if Federal Government overrides state vote with “High Court Mandate”…Being sick never got so popular…

Mom and Pop Marijuana Stores Could Get Kicked To The Curb

July 19, 2010

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – After weathering the fear of federal prosecution and competition from drug cartels, California’s medical marijuana growers see a new threat to their tenuous existence: the “Wal-Marting” of weed.

The Oakland City Council on Tuesday will look at licensing four production plants where pot would be grown, packaged and processed into items ranging from baked goods to body oil. Winning applicants would have to pay $211,000 in annual permit fees, carry $2 million worth of liability insurance and be prepared to devote up to 8 percent of gross sales to taxes.

The move, and fledgling efforts in other California cities to sanction cannabis cultivation for the first time, has some marijuana advocates worried that regulations intended to bring order to the outlaw industry and new revenues to cash-strapped local governments could drive small “mom and pop” growers out of business.

“Nobody wants to see the McDonald’s-ization of cannabis,” Dan Scully, one of the 400 “patient-growers” who supply Oakland’s largest retail medical marijuana dispensary, Harborside Health Center, grumbled after a City Council committee gave the blueprint preliminary approval last week. “I would compare it to how a small business feels about shutting down its business and going to work at Wal-Mart. Who would be attracted to that?”

Mom and Pops pushed aside for the big box retailers…At least they can sell the hemp clothing they have been advocating forever…………

Eye View Weekend.Big Name Judges In Town For Cannabis Cup Throwdown

June 24, 2010

Medical marijuana has gone mainstream in the Bay Area.  So much so that one of the “hot” places to be this past weekend was the first ever High Times Medical Cannabis Cup, which drew huge crowds in the City.

The event is a tamer version of Amsterdam’s annual Cannabis Cup, which has been growing strong there for more than 20 years.   It’s the Academy Awards of marijuana cultivators.

For two days hundreds of people plunked down $60 and packed the Terra Gallery on Harrison to learn everything about pot.

The highlight of the weekend is the Cannabis Cup Award. A group of elite judges put their heads together pick the best ganja from dispensaries around the Bay Area.  Yes, personal testing was involved.

The two top winners were “God’s Pussy” by GreenBicycles and “Cali Gold” from Mr. Natural Inc.

The expo brought together medical marijuana experts, growers, advocates and patients who featured seminars for cultivation and activism hosted by the big names in the medi-pot scene.

Aging Baby Boomer Alert…Going Green

March 19, 2010

Medical marijuana is now legal in 15 states for patients suffering certain conditions, including, in Colorado, chronic pain. More than 60,000 Coloradans have doctor recommendations allowing them to buy marijuana; physicians are approving about 400 new patients a day. Pot shops have popped up all over, including at least 230 here in Denver. But a growing number of potrepreneurs have gone upscale, investing as much as $100,000 to launch “wellness centers” that look like spas—and just happen to sell weed. This new breed of marijuana “pharmacist” is pushing hard to professionalize the industry. Baby Boomers will not age gracefully and this could get ugly…..
