Paul Ryan Flies Over The Cuckoos Nest, Trying To Debate Laughing Joe

October 12, 2012

DANVILLE, Ky. — Paul Ryan prepared for several possibilities during his weeks-long debate practice with a Joe Biden stand-in, but arguing with a laughing opponent wasn’t one of them.

“The laughter certainly was not something that we expected,” Mitt Romney campaign spokesman Michael Steel told Yahoo News after the debate.

During the vice presidential debate here Thursday, Biden regularly smiled and laughed out loud while Ryan was speaking, and often chuckled at times when it wasn’t clear what he was smiling about.

Eye View VP Debate, Was Joe Funny? How Did He Amuse You? Did He Amuse Like A Clown?

October 12, 2012

This time, they didn’t need Big Bird.

Because really, who needed a “Sesame Street” character to grab all the post-debate attention when there was Joe Biden’s smile- or laugh, chuckle, grimace, grin, smirk, or “goofy face,” according to various descriptions?

Whether you loved or hated his performance – a decision that seemed to split (surprise!) along partisan lines – it was Biden who dominated the conversation during and after Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, with his animated facial reactions to almost anything his opponent, Paul Ryan, uttered.

Ask The Eye, Be Respectful of Crazy Uncle Joe

September 10, 2012

Dear Eye View

My 22-year-old son will soon meet my older brother, his uncle, for the first time. My brother has some mental problems and is subject to incoherent outbursts, paranoid ramblings, etc. … My son knows his uncle has some issues but he doesn’t know any particulars. Should I warn my son of the kind of behavior he might see from his uncle or is that unfair? Should I give my brother a chance to make a decent first impression? My brother can often be charming and coherent for short periods of time. Maybe I should just stay out of it and give him a chance? What do you think?

Need Help

Dear NH

I wish you had explained why it’s taken 22 years for your son to meet your brother. I hope it’s not because the person you are calling “Crazy Uncle Joe” has been locked away in the proverbial attic because of a sense of shame over mental illness. Your son is a grown man so surely he has known people will various mental disabilities—I bet he has even gone to school with them—and is able to grasp the concept that his uncle has schizophrenia, or whatever the diagnosis is. You explain to your son your brother’s history and that he can be charming and lucid, but also sometimes is incoherent and paranoid. Tell your son that whatever kind of day your brother is having, you know he will be patient and respectful of his Uncle Joe. Hope this helps.

Joe Biden Forces Gay Issue Shoots Self In Foot

May 10, 2012

In his ABC interview, the president pretended that his much touted “evolution” had now led him, ineluctably, to speak out now, today; he simply could longer stay silent. ABC let him off the hook, but this is not a credible account.  In March, the Washington Post was reporting the debate among his advisers on whether the issue would help or hurt the reelection campaign and what, therefore, Obama should say: “Obama’s top political advisers have held serious discussions with leading Democrats about the upsides and downsides of coming out for gay marriage before the fall election.”

The same advisers told the Post that Obama would make the decision based on his gut, but that is an insulting way to refer to the vice president.  There is no evidence that Obama planned to speak until Joe Biden said last weekend that he was for gay “marriage” and forced the issue.

Joe Biden Makes Most Audacious Comment Of The Last 500 Years

March 20, 2012

Vice President Joe Biden said Monday that the raid that killed Osama bin Laden was the most “audacious plan” of the past 500 years. Biden’s comments, made at a Democratic fundraiser in Morris Township, NJ, ranked the May 2011 assault that ended the Al-Qaeda chief’s life above the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944, the surprise landing at Inchon in 1950 that turned the tide of the Korean War or, going back a bit further, George Washington’s daring night-time crossing of the Delaware River before the Battle of Trenton in 1776.

“You can go back 500 years. You cannot find a more audacious plan. Never knowing for certain. We never had more than a 48% probability that he was there,” Biden said, hailing the raid as a shining example of President Barack Obama’s leadership.”Do any one of you have a doubt that if that raid failed that this guy would be a one-term president?” Biden asked, according to the media pool report from the event. “This guy is willing to do the right thing and risk losing.”

Train Station Named For Stimulus Sheriff Joe Biden $5.7M Over Budget, Figures

March 18, 2011

As a thank-you to its most famous customer, Amtrak is renaming the train station in Wilmington, Del., after stimulus “sheriff” Vice President Joseph R. Biden — after the project received $20 million in stimulus money and came in $5.7 million over the initial announced budget.

Spokesmen for Mr. Biden, who said he personally fought for stimulus money for Amtrak, didn’t respond to messages Wednesday or Thursday.

President Obama, soon after signing the Recovery Act in early 2009, designated Mr. Biden his “sheriff” overseeing the stimulus funds, charging him with regularly checking in with governors and mayors to try to prevent waste, fraud and abuse in the $821 billion economic recovery package.

Joe Biden Sets Record For Motorcade Crashes, Distracted Tracking Stimulus Spending

November 5, 2010

Since the Obama administration announced a series of measures in October last year to put an end to distracted driving, including an executive order directed at federal employees, Vice-President Joe Biden’s motorcade has been involved in at least five crashes. That’s an unusually high number for such a motorcade.

While it’s not uncommon for presidential and vice-presidential motorcades to be involved in crashes, it is rare. There are usually just one or two reported incidents in eight years in office. So what’s worrying about Mr. Biden is the high number of incidents his motorcade has already had, still less than two years into the job.

Internet Voting Bad Idea For Hackers and The Stupid

October 5, 2010

Last week, the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics opened a new Internet-based voting system for a weeklong test period, inviting computer experts from all corners to prod its vulnerabilities in the spirit of “give it your best shot.” Well, the hackers gave it their best shot — and midday Friday, the trial period was suspended, with the board citing “usability issues brought to our attention.”

Here’s one of those issues: After casting a vote, according to test observers, the Web site played “Hail to the Victors” — the University of Michigan fight song.

“The integrity of the system had been violated,” said Paul Stenbjorn, the board’s chief technology officer.

Stenbjorn said a Michigan professor whom the board has been working with on the project had “unleashed his students” during the test period, and one succeeded in infiltrating the system.

The fight song is a symptom of deeper vulnerabilities, says Jeremy Epstein, a computer scientist working with the Common Cause good-government nonprofit on online voting issues. “In order to do that, they had to be able to change anything they wanted on the Web site,” Epstein said.

Because of the hack, Stenbjorn said Monday, a portion of the Internet voting pilot — which was expected to be rolled out this month — is being temporarily scrapped.

Internet voting a bad idea for a bunch of reasons. One being, more voting aged American know Angelina Jolie than Joe Biden.

Joe Biden “Hits The Accelerator” On Stimulus, Must Be The Floor Mat

August 27, 2010

FRESNO, Calif. — Vice President Joe Biden said this week that the Obama administration “hit the accelerator” toward spending $5 billion under the economic stimulus law to weatherize people’s homes, create thousands of jobs, help consumers save money and put the nation on track for energy independence.

Yet the weatherization program the vice president highlighted in his visit Thursday to New Hampshire is widely considered among the least organized spending projects under the $814 billion economic stimulus law and has regularly been targeted for criticism of its slow progress by auditors and outsiders. Biden didn’t hint much at its troubles.

Nearly 18 months since it started, the stimulus weatherization program has experienced spending delays, inefficiencies and mismanagement. In Biden’s home state of Delaware, the entire program has been suspended since May, and last month federal auditors identified possible fraud.

Nancy Pelosi, One Scary Mother of Health Care

July 19, 2010

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is “the mother of health care,” Vice President Joe Biden proclaimed Monday.

Speaking at a campaign event in Philadelphia for congressional candidate Bryan Lentz, Biden reworked a line of praise from Rep. Allyson Schwartz, who said Pelosi was the most powerful woman in American politics.

“I would rephrase that: the most powerful person in American politics with the exception of the President of the United States,” Biden said, according to the pool report. “The single most successful, the single most persuasive, the single most strategic leader I have ever worked with is Nancy Pelosi.”
