100 Watt Bulb Goes Away In January, Last Christmas With A Leg To Stand On

May 17, 2011

Two leading makers of lighting products are showcasing LED bulbs that are bright enough to replace energy-guzzling 100-watt light bulbs set to disappear from stores in January.

Their demonstrations at the LightFair trade show in Philadelphia this week mean that brighter LED bulbs will likely go on sale next year, but after a government ban takes effect.

The new bulbs will also be expensive — about $50 each — so the development may not prevent consumers from hoarding traditional bulbs.

Last Christmas with consumers having a leg to stand on. New bulbs create less energy use, electric companies rates go up to handle reduced use. Another kick in the pants.

Ask The Eye, Christmas Gifts And Relationships Can Be Frajillee

December 10, 2010

Dear Eye View

I have been “prank wrapping” gifts to my family for years. It’s nothing too serious (nesting boxes, duct tape wrapping, heavy lead weights on gift cards), and everyone seems to enjoy it. The only problem is that I have met that special someone, and while the rest of her family approves of our relationship, her mother does not. She has questioned my financial standing—which is excellent—even though she and my girlfriend’s father are flat broke. Mostly she refuses to talk to me at all. So I put her gift in a box that can’t be opened without the use of metal cutting tools. While I am happy with this (I consider it a masterpiece of gift wrapping), my girlfriend is ill-at-ease. She recognizes the tension between me and her mother, and understands that it may never be resolved, but thinks this might be going a little far. I am not sure that it is. Does this exceed the treatment I have received from her mother?

Dear Loki

Maybe your girlfriends mother has problems with you because you are someone that likes to  to “prank wrap” Christmas gifts. Not everyone understands the joy in receiving a prank wrapped gift. She is not a member of your family and may find having to use channel lock pliers to open her Chrismas gift stupid and pointless. I can only guess the gift inside  is tasteful and appropriate as well. Anyway, much like dealing with certain relationships, be sure to  stamp fragile on the outside of the gift and I am sure it will improve your relationship with your girlfriends mother. How this helps..EV
