Secretary of State Hillary Clinton departed Washington today for a two-week Asia trip meant to shore up US ties with its Pacific neighbors.
Clinton departed Washington for her first stop, Hawaii, before traveling on to Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Australia and American Samoa.
While in Honolulu, Clinton is to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara, whose country is embroiled in a spat with China over a disputed island chain in the East China Sea. She also is to give a speech on policy toward Asia.
Flying via the US-administered Pacific island of Guam Clinton will arrive in Vietnam Friday after the completion of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathering, and will attend Saturday’s wider 16-nation East Asia Summit.
Upon departing Vietnam, Clinton will travel late Saturday to Siem Reap, Cambodia. She will visit Angor Wat on Sunday and meet King Simahoni and Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh on Monday.
